1 tbsp. oil
1/2 tsp. cumin seeds
1 garlic clove, pared, minced
1-1/2 oz. onion, pared, chopped
3-1/2 oz. lentils
13 oz. water
salt, cayenne pepper, to taste


Heat oil in pan. Add cumin; fry to 2 to 3 seconds. Add garlic; fry until brown. Add onion; fry until brown. Add lentils and water; heat to boiling. Reduce heat; simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Season.
